The awards to Mr. Alhaidar and Ms. Ali will be presented by Moorhead Human Rights Commission at the Moorhead City Council Meeting in conjunction with International Human Rights Day. Please join us on Monday, December 10, 2018 at 5:30pm in the First Floor City Council Chambers, 500 Center Avenue, Moorhead.
The public is invited to attend the presentation and also the public reception prior to the meeting. The reception begins at 4pm and also honors outgoing City Council members. Human Rights Award recipients will be present from 5 - 5:30 pm.
2018 Human Rights Awards Recipients:
Ezzat Alhaidar: Ezzat was a Yazidi refugee from Iraq. Before coming to the United States, Ezzat also served as an interpreter with the U.S army in Iraq, working side by side with US troops during combat missions and other military activities. Ezzat leads Chira Global Development Organization, a local nonprofit. He hosts leadership and cultural diversity seminars and workshops. Ezzat recently worked to encourage many Iraqi-American voters to participate in the process by going door-to-door to explain their rights and civic responsibilities. Ezzat works to engage the community in conversations that promote peace and bring awareness to marginalized groups in the community.
Farhia Ali: Farhia arrived in this community as a young girl unable to speak English. She worked to overcome the obstacles created by cultural barriers. Farhia volunteers to help and to mentor New American youth. She created the Youth Bank Project with the Afro American Development Association, a local non-profit where she is employed as a case manager. The project is designed to help youth with homework and address youth issues in the community. The project works to bridge the gap between immigrant and non-immigrant students.
Farhia has spent years volunteering as an interpreter in doctors’ offices, in the schools, and in the courts.
