POSTER AWARD WINNER TO BE RECOGNIZED AT THE MOORHEAD CITY COUNCIL MEETING TONIGHT

Post Date:04/14/2014 9:16 am

PosterHope McCleod will be recognized for her achievements during the 2013 Poster Contest sponsored by the Minnesota State Fire Chiefs Association before the Moorhead City Council at the Council Meeting tonight at 5:30 pm. in the City Council Chambers at Moorhead City Hall.

Hope is a second grader at Ellen Hopkins Elementary and won first prize out of all second and third graders in the State of Minnesota.  Her poster, “Prevent Kitchen Fires” earned her a $75 cash prize.  She will be featured in the March/April 2014 edition of Minnesota Fire Chief Magazine and will receive a City Proclamation for her achievement.   This event will be open to the public and will be available for replay at http://www.cityofmoorhead.com/government/mayor-city-council/council-meetings .

“Kitchen Fires are the most common residential fires we see in the State,” said Moorhead Fire Chief Rich Duysen. “Hope’s poster presents a great message to help prevent these fires in the home and we are very proud of her accomplishment.”

Chief Duysen reminds everyone to never leave cooking fires unattended.  Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and use it or a lid to smother a grease fire on your cooktop.  Never throw water on a grease fire.  If you cannot extinguish a fire on your first attempt, get everyone out of the house and call 911. Do not re-enter your home.  Live every day with your family’s safety in mind.
