The City General Election will be held on Tuesday, November 8, 2011, at which the following offices shall be filled:

           Ward 1 Council Member (4-year term)
           Ward 2 Council Member (4-year term)
           Ward 3 Council Member (4-year term)
           Ward 4 Council Member (4-year term)

Election Results
Results of the November 8, 2011 election will be posted online as election information is submitted to election officials after polls close on Election Day.

Voter Eligibility
A person is eligible to vote, if at the time of the election, he or she:

  • will be at least 18 years of age
  • is a citizen of the United States
  • will have resided in Minnesota for at least 20 days immediately preceding Election Day
  • is not under court-ordered guardianship
  • has not been found by a court to be legally incompetent
  • has a felony conviction record discharged, expired, or completed.

Voter Registration
Voters can pre-register to vote up until October 18, 2011. The City encourages residents to register to vote prior to Election Day by completing a Voter Registration Form and sending it to the Clay County Auditor's Office at 807 11 ST N, Moorhead, MN.

To register on Election Day voters will need to provide proof of residence. For additional information on registration and proof of residence, please visit the MN Secretary of State website at http://www.sos.state.mn.us/index.aspx?page=204 or contact the Clay County Auditor's office at 218.299.5006.

Voter Registration Lookup
If a resident is unsure whether they are registered to vote at their current address they can find out quickly and easily by going to the following website: https://mnvotes.sos.state.mn.us/VoterStatus.aspx. A voter's registration remains current until the voter moves, changes their name, or does not vote for four consecutive years.

Absentee Voting
Beginning September 23, 2011 voters that are unable to get to their polling place on Election Day can vote by casting an absentee ballot. In Minnesota, citizens are allowed to vote by absentee ballot for the following reasons:

  1. absent from the precinct
  2. illness or disability
  3. unable to go to the polling place due to a religious observance or belief
  4. service as an election judge in another precinct
The Clay County Auditor's Office will be handling all absentee voting for the 2011 City General Election. Voters can contact the Auditor's office at 218.299.5006 or visit in person between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. (Monday – Friday) at the Clay County Courthouse (807 11 ST N).

Polling Places
The City of Moorhead will be reviewing its current polling locations for possible revisions to better meet the needs of the Moorhead residents. However, until notified otherwise of any change, the following sites continue to serve as the Moorhead polling locations/places.

Election Judges
Citizens appointed to serve as election judges staff Moorhead's 13 polling places/locations. To serve as an election judge, you must be:

  • Eligible to vote in Minnesota
  • Able to read, write and speak English
  • Cannot be a spouce, parent, child or sibling of any candidate on the ballot in that precinct
  • Cannot be a spouse, parent, child or sibling of any election judge serving in the same precinct at the same time
  • Trained and currently certified as an election judge
  • High School students 16 years and older may serve as trainee election judges

Duties performed by an election judge include:

  • Set up the polling place
  • Operate voting equipment
  • Direct voters to the correct line
  • Register individuals to vote
  • Ensure all qualified voters are permitted to vote
  • Demonstrate how to vote
  • Assist voters
  • Close down polling place following voting
  • Determine results after polls close
  • Certify the polling place results
Election judges are paid an hourly wage. State law allows time off from work without loss of wages to serve as an election judge with 20 days prior notice to the employer. If interested, please contact the City Clerk's office at 218.299.5304 for additional information.
