Lieutenant Mike Detloff, as well as other officers, were dispatched on February 22,2014 to the 34 St bridge for a male hanging halfway off the bridge, threatening to jump. Lieutenant Detloff arrived on scene and began speaking with the subject. The negotiation process took time and the weather conditions were extremely cold with a very low wind chill. The subject was not dressed for the weather and officers could see frostbite building on his fingers and hands. Officers feared that he might fall accidently due to uncontrollable shaking from the cold. Officers also learned the subject had just overdosed on a few medications. Overtime, Lieutenant Detloff continued to speak with the subject and slowly inched his way closer to the male. A few moments later, Lieutenant Detloff was able to pin the male against the ledge until other officers were able to assist with removing him from the bridge.
