City of Moorhead Recognized for Sustainability Efforts

Post Date:06/29/2022 9:40 am

The Minnesota GreenStep program, which focuses on sustainability and achieving quality-of-life goals, has recognized the City of Moorhead as a Step 5 city, which is the highest level recognized by the program. Moorhead is one of 147 participating cities and tribal nations in the 12-year-old challenge, assistance, and recognition program.

“This award shows community members and other cities across Minnesota that the City of Moorhead is taking great steps in the direction of energy and resource conservation and innovation,” said Crystal Rayamajhi, Sustainability Coordinator and GreenStep program lead with the City of Moorhead.

Moorhead continues to implement best practices to meet sustainability goals with support from the GreenStep program and peer cities. Actions taken within the program focus on cost savings, energy use reduction, resource conservation, climate change, and the encouragement of civic innovation.

To achieve Step 5, Moorhead collected sustainability data on a variety of metrics that can be used as a baseline to make future improvements. Step 5 metrics cover a wide variety of sustainability goals including walking/biking infrastructure, transit options, local food, water usage, renewable energy, and solid waste. Many city departments -– planning, public works, MPS, wastewater, GIS, forestry -– collaborated to gather the data.

City Manager Dan Mahli was excited by the news, but said that the work continues. “Achieving Step 5 was a goal for the City. So many people worked so hard to get us there but that doesn’t mean we’re done. This isn’t a ‘now we can rest’ type of program. We have to keep focusing on sustainability and resilience for the benefit of our residents and our City. Maybe we get so good they create Step 6 for us!”
