Moorhead Police Investigating an Overnight Shooting (UPDATE)

On August 16, 2025, at 3:54 AM the Moorhead Police Department responded to an apartment building in the 1100 block of 2 Avenue South for a report of a shooting.

Officers arrived and located two adult victims, a 53- and 21-year-old, both deceased from gunshot wounds. A firearm has been recovered on scene. The victims were known to each other. Preliminary information gathered on scene and in speaking to witnesses, leads investigators to believe this incident is a murder suicide.

The victims will be positively identified through the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office, after autopsies are performed. Investigators continue to work and notify next of kin, of the deceased.

This is a second critical incident to happen in the City of Moorhead this week. Moorhead Police Chief Chris Helmick shares this with our community:

"We are deeply saddened by another tragic event that has impacted the Moorhead community. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family and all those affected by this loss.

While Moorhead continues to be a safe and welcoming place to live, we recognize that recent events have understandably raised concerns and prompted questions about public safety. Please know that the Moorhead Police Department remains fully committed to protecting our residents and maintaining low crime rates. We will continue working diligently to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone in our community."

Additional information will be provided when it is available. The investigation remains active.

The original release identified a victim as being 43 years of age, the correct age is 53.
