Music educator Peter Haberman receives MoorHeart award

Post Date:11/27/2023 8:00 pm

Congratulations to Peter Haberman! On November 27, the Moorhead City Council presented him with the MoorHeart award.

Peter is committed to encouraging students to come study music in Moorhead as well as showing them his support once they are here. While Peter is a talented musician and Director of Bands at Concordia College, he also encourages everyone in Moorhead to remember why Moorhead is a beautiful place to live. Peter’s nomination includes the following statement:

“As director of bands at Concordia College, Peter literally drives all over the state of Minnesota, finding remarkable musical talent and touting the benefits of living in Moorhead.  He is responsible for countless talented students moving to Moorhead to pursue their degrees.  As I was driving past Concordia this morning, with the trees decked out in winter splendor, I was simultaneously hit with how much I appreciate living here and how cool it is that Peter Haberman does this thing where he travels all over telling people how cool it is to live here. Once students move here to be part of the Concordia band program, he mentors them.  He works tirelessly to make sure their experience here is fruitful for them and the band. Of course, that is not all that Peter does that expresses his heart.  He also makes sure there is a place for international students at his personal Thanksgiving table.  When the dining hall closes for the holidays, international students – who are prevented from holding a job – must find their own food. Peter makes space for them at his table.”

For all Peter does for Moorhead – and especially for the way Peter shows his love for Moorhead through his love for music and helping others – the MoorHeart selection committee chose him to receive the MoorHeart award.

The MoorHeart award is an opportunity to recognize individuals who go above and beyond to demonstrate community within our City by their actions and service. A team of volunteers from city boards and commissions selects award recipients. The MoorHeart award is commemorated with a piece of art commissioned from local artist Dennis Krull especially for this purpose.

It's easy to nominate deserving individuals or organizations for the MoorHeart award. Contributions large and small are worthy of nomination!
