Heritage Garden and Amphitheater for Moorhead

Post Date:05/04/2015 3:37 pm

The Heritage Garden and Amphitheater for Moorhead will be located near the site of the decommissioned power plant along the Red River and adjacent to Woodlawn Park. The area will recreate an environment that serves as an homage to the power plant while also acknowledging the important role it played in the development of Moorhead. Its sculpted landscapes of low berms, garden beds, native plantings, and sculptural elements will draw people to the site and serve as a conduit between the river parkway and Woodlawn Park.

The Heritage Garden will also include a new amenity for Moorhead, an earthen amphitheater, built into the hillside north of the main garden area. It will be used for events such as musical performances and outdoor film screenings.

Volunteers are needed on Tuesday, May 5 from 9 am to 5 pm and again on Wednesday, May 6 from 9 am until the project is complete and will be helping to rake black dirt into shape in preparation for hyrdoseeding.

Over the next few weeks, volunteers will also be needed to help spread the word about donating plants to be used in the space.  Full sun perennial donations are being sought for the garden.  These plants will serve as a living document of our traditions and agricultural history.

If you are interested in donating plants or sharing a story about the space please email project coordinators or fill out their online survey.

Planting of all donated plants will take place on June 6 and 7.

For more information please email project organizers.
