DARE
Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) is a collaborative effort by certified law enforcement officers, educators, students, parents and the community to offer an educational program in the classroom to prevent or reduce drug abuse and violence among children and youth. The emphasis of DARE is to help students recognize and resist the many direct and subtle pressures that influence them to experiment with alcohol, tobacco, prescription medication, marijuana, inhalants and other drugs or to engage in violence.
DARE in Moorhead started in 1990 as part of the 6th grade core curriculum. Today, DARE is taught in all public and private schools in Moorhead. The Police Department has worked with:
- Approximately 7,000 5th and 6th grade students on the DARE core curriculum
- Over 5,000 middle students that have completed the middle program
- Over 10,000 elementary students
- Over 10,000 high school students
Each year the DARE Officers also make hundreds of community presentations to service groups, college classes, neighborhood groups, and other interested community members.
The success of the DARE Program in our community has been obvious by the support we have received from the community. Putting a DARE Officer in our schools has been a great benefit to the Police Department in our community policing effort.
Our program is taught by DARE Officer Ethan Meehan. School Resource Officers Brian Dahl and Katie Schultz and Sergeant Chris Martin also assist in teaching the program.
